I was in San Antonio, Texas when SF2 first came out, and all the games were 25 cents at my local arcade. You played until you died to the CPU, someone else challenged you and beat you, or you beat the game. On the rare times I had a machine to myself, if I died to the CPU, I started the whole game over to maximize the time I could play - that's how I learned to beat the game with one credit with every character. After vanilla SF2, Capcom made the CPU a lot cheaper and less vulnerable to simple patterns. If someone else was playing already and no one was waiting to challenge, it was polite to put a token in, and say "I'll save you," which meant, I won't press start to challenge until it looks like the CPU is about to win so you can play as long as possible.
STREET FIGHTER 4 ARCADE MACHINES MOVIE
The game was so popular that there were two or three machines in every arcade in town, one in most grocery stores, drug stores, convenience stores (7-11 etc), at every movie theater, and in every mall arcade (every mall used to have an arcade next to the movie theater), bowling alley, pool hall, roller skating rink, and even in some laundromats, pizza huts, and barber shops. I've even heard of dentists that had a SF2 cab in their waiting rooms. It was as big a deal as Fortnite is today to give you some perspective. Typically there was a long line of people waiting to play. Arcades sold tokens, and you could get 5 tokens for a dollar or 30 tokens for 5 dollars. Our parents would drop us off at the arcade at noon with five bucks and come back five hours later, so you had to make the money last.
